College Trip to Manchester

I visited Manchester with the college and while I was there I went to Afflecks. Afflecks is a market that is full of alternative shops and stalls. It sell everything from top hats to tattoos and offers the chance to purchase unique stuff.

I had never been before and was amazed by all the stuff it sells. It was ideal for my research because it had a quite a bit of Steampunk related stuff there and it was the kind of shop I was doing my market report on.
I bought a few things for myself. These where some of the Steampunk jewellery that was available there.

Victorian Style Bracelet

I made this bracelet from a old watch strap, lace and a square pendent.

I created this sample to go in my sketchbook. The fabric already had the print on it and I just embellished it. I use parts from an old clock I took apart and chains from some old jewellery, attaching these to the top hat. Then I sewed antique lace and buttons to complete it.

Steampunk

In my last post I explained what my first brief involved, researching a subculture. As you can tell from the title of this post, I chose Steampunk. I heard about this subculture from a friend who had asked me to make her a Steampunk themed prom dress. From then on I have been interested the subculture.

First Day

I started my foundation degree in Fashion today. I got the first brief and I'm quite excited to start working on it. Its called "Introduction to fashion 2014". As part of the brief, I get look at how street styles and subcultures influence designers and their collections. I will produce a garment from the research I conduct during this brief.

The class was given a task which was to create paper garments in groups. This is what my group made. We used origami as influence for our creations and we ended up with something that looked quite visionary.

After completing our paper creation, we had to sketch it afterwards. This is my drawing.
