Design Development - Ill Dottore

This is my development of my outfit for Ill Dottore. I started with the hourglass silhouette which I took form my 50s trend. I was inspired by the shape of a human heart and incorporated it in to a skirt design.  

 I then developed the shape of the skirt and made it shorter and more rounded. I then started to add some embellishment details on to it in the shapes of veins in the heart. 

 I continued to develop the details and features on the dress by adding a neckpiece and incorporating  different textile techniques. 

Design Development - Colombina

This is my development of my outfit for Colombina. I started with the corset shape and this gave me a hourglass shape. Then I incorporated the shape of butterfly wings and added a skirt.  

 I added embellishment  on to the bodice. 

 Next, I developed the skirt design by changing the shape and adding beading. 

Design Development - Alecchino

This is my development of my outfit for Alecchino. I started with shape of a circus tent and turned this into a skirt design.  This gave me an hourglass silhouette which relates to my 50s trend. 

 I then added gathered fabric onto the dress and played around with the different ways it could wrap around the body. 

 I changed the skirt after seeing Georges Chakra A/W 2013/14 collection and was inspired by the shapes of his dresses. This linked in with my 50s trend. I then took inspiration from the costumes circus performers wear and changed the design to a fitted jumpsuit. 

 I continued to play around with the placement of the gathered fabric and I went back to the circus tent shaped skit. 

Design development - Brighella

For one of the tasks in this brief,  I have to produce design development of my final four outfits.
This is my development of my outfit for Brighella. As well as using my research in my design, I have to incorporate a trend. I chose the 50s trend for A/W 2014/15.

I started with the hourglass shape which I took from my trend. I then started to play around with the neckline shape.  The pointed neckline was inspired by the Disney character Maleficent's costume. 

Here I have added pleats on to the dress. This was inspired by Sarli Couture A/W 2013/14 collection. 

I used the furrowing  I did on the stand to inform a strap around the neck  and played around with the hourglass silhouette.   

 

I have used the Wicked Witch's costume from Oz; The Great and Powerful movie to inspire a shoulder wedge.  

 

Research 4

I researched into my fourth character called Ill Dottore, which translates to the Doctor in english.

I started by looking at his profession. I took the stethoscope and created shape development. This lead me to look at the heart. 

 I found an image were it just showed the veins and arteries in the heart. It looked really delicate and detailed and reminded me of lace. When I looked at the heart cut in half, it inspired a sample, where I cut circles of fabric and folded them in quaters and sewed them next to each other. It created a textured effect.  

 Next, I looked into his personality, which was pompous, proud and magisterial. This related to a Italian royal family who also had these traits. I found their clothing really interesting and created samples and shape development from them.

Christopher David White Made these incredibly detailed sculptures. Although, they may look like they are made from wood, there actually made from clay.

Oz: The Great and Powerful

I recently watched this film, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and instantly loved the costumes. It relates to my collection theme about portraying characters though clothing. 

I drew 

inspiration from the Wicked Witch' costume for one of my outfits in my collection. I liked the detail on the shoulders and brought this forward into my design. 

Research 3

I have continued my Columbina thread. I looked at what women do to look beautiful such as having plastic surgery. This reminded me of a textile technique called shahiko, so I created some samples of this.

Research 2

I am now researching my third character, which is called Colombina. She is a vain character that wears a lot of heavy eye makeup.  I looked into the things women do to look beautiful such as wearing makeup and wearing corset to make them self look thinner. 

At the moment the colour scheme consists of  pinks, oranges, blues and purples

Research

I have started researching into my second character for my collection. 

Arlecchino is a character that has the agility of an acrobat. This lead me to look into circus performers and what they wear.  The colours scheme that was informed by my research is mostly oranges and reds. 

One thing I  partially liked about the circus costumes was the ruffles on the clowns costume. I took this and created some shape development and samples.

The circus performers that hang from the ceiling have rope wrapped around their legs and arms. This lead to some modelling on the stand. I experimented with wrapping and twisting strips of fabric around the mannequin.  

I looked at the circus tent shape which  informed some shape development of on exaggerated skirt shape.  

Research For Collection

For the new briefs, I have to start developing my final collection. 

This is my initial thought for my collection theme. I am really interested in the venice carnival and how dramatic and theatrical the costumes are. From here I focused on one thing from my mind map. Commedia Dell Arte which is a form of Italian theatre.  

For my final collection I have to create four outfits. So I have decided to make each outfit represent one of the characters from Commedia Dell Arte. 

My first character is Brighella, who is the villain. This lead me to look at Maleficent from snow white. From here I started to get an idea for the colour scheme, of purples and blacks.   

From maleficent I went to the devil. This lead to wrath, one of the seven deadly sins. I started to look at explosions and the shapes they create which lead to some modelling on the stand.

 I really like the direction this thread is taking and think I could produce something quite theatrical from my research. I would like to look into the idea of the model producing fire as walks down the catwalk.
